It’s often described as an iPhone 6 in a smaller body, being just as powerful and fast as the flagship iPhone 6S. This makes it a decent competitor for the newest iPhone 7 and a chunk of the cost. Features like fingerprint ID, 4K video and a 12MP camera are present and the phone comes in two options- 16 or 64GB.
The iPhone SE is similar in looks to the 5S due to its size, yet features the same aluminium body as the iPhone 6 giving it a smoother finish. While it’s thicker than the iPhone 6 and 6S, it’s still lighter in weight and will appeal to Apple fans who dislike the larger iPhones.
While the screen resolution doesn’t quite match the 6S due to the reduced display, it still provides a decent picture quality with a pixel resolution of 1136×640 and captures high quality photos. Where the iPhone SE falls short is the lack of 3D Touch which is one of the stand-out features of the iPhone 6S as well as the lower quality of the front camera- which is a mere 1.2 MP in comparison to the rear camera’s full 12MP.
One of the emphasised features of the iPhone SE is the faster 4G and wifi coverage. Over 4G LTE it will go up to a speed of 150 mbps- which is tech speak for Megabits per second. It also has access to 19 LTE bands making worldwide roaming increasingly possible. Although while Apple claim to provide faster 4G, the performance of this is all down to the individual network and the service they provide so it is important to check these details against the provider you’re considering if super speedy internet is a priority.
The iPhone SE is well received when it comes to performance as it rivals the iPhone 6 and 6S in power and speed, having the same A9 chip to process its inner workings. So in this respect, size doesn’t hamper it.
In some ways it’s a combination of the iPhone 5s and 6. It is perhaps trying to cater to users who dislike certain changes brought in by the iPhone 6 yet still want speed, Touch ID and Apple Pay. It is a cheaper option than the popular iPhone 6S so this will of course mean it won’t be capable of everything that the 6S can do- so is it a step back or forward? It’s hard to tell, it does seem like Apple is trying to cover all bases and cater to customer demand which can only be a good thing.
There are no solid reasons not to- as it is more budget friendly than the 6S and 7 and users seem to be pleased with it in general. It’s a good choice if you’re looking to upgrade from an iPhone 5s or 5c as you’ll see a noticeable improvement and is suitable for users who don’t need the large storage capacities or features of the iPhone 7.
The fact that Apple seem to be responding to demand with this phone makes for a compelling case too as it means they actively want to produce something that people want. While it’s cheaper than the iPhone 6S and 7, it’s by no means the most budget friendly phone on the market- the iPhone 5S still winning as the best budget iPhone
